Community Contra Dance
- January 18, 2011
The SNCA Community Contra Dance committee is starting their winter series off on January 22, 2011 with the popular band, Blue Ridge Rounders along with caller Janet Shepherd.
Contra Dance is similar to square dancing and the Virginia Reel although the music is quite different. Dancers line up in 2 parallel lines. There are about a dozen different steps that are put together by the caller in various ways. You move up and down the hall as you dance, giving you the chance to interact with everyone there. The caller guides the dancers through each dance many times before actually putting it to music. You don’t need any experience, just come on in and have some fun!
The evening begins at 6:30 PM with a pot luck dinner. Please bring a dish to share if you would like to participate in the dinner. An introductory lesson will begin at 7:30 PM and the dance gets started at 8 PM and ends at 11 PM. Admission is $7 for adult SNCA members, $8 for non members, $4 for students, Free for children 7 and under (must be accompanied by a supervising adult). Call 706-754-3254 for more information and details.
Dances will also be held in February and March with Learn and Dance sessions in between.
The dance takes place in the SNCA historic gym at the Sautee Nacoochee Center located on Highway 255 North, 1/4 mile off Highway 17 in Sautee Nacoochee near Helen, Georgia.
