Spring WildflowersMark your calendar for this 2 day Earth Day event, “Spring Wildflowers around Unicoi” being held on April 15 – 16, 2011. This wildflower program will start out on Friday, April 15 with slides and a lecture. It will continue with wildflower walks around Unicoi State Park in Helen, Georgia. Whether you are a novice or knowledgeable on the subject of wildflowers, you will learn about and appreciate the beauty of the North Georgia mountain wildflowers. Pre-registration is required for each walk.

Herbs of Spring

VioletsIf you are interested in learning about medicinal plants, Herbs of Spring is the first in a 3 part Medicinal Plant Series at Smithgall Woods Conservation Park in Helen, Georgia on April 9, 2011 from 12 Noon to 4 PM. Learn about spring plants and flowers that are used medicinally with slides, handouts, and a plant walk focusing on plants such as Violets, Chickweed, and Bluets. There will even be some medicine made during the series.

The second part of the series will be held in June and the third will be held in November. Cost for the entire series is $90 or $35 for each class. There is also a $5 parking fee. For more information and details, call 706-878-3087.

St. Patrick’s Day

Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day at the Hayloft Tavern and Grill in Helen, Georgia with a tasty meal and then get ready to rock when the band, Ratz in the Attic hits the stage at 9PM on March 17, 2011.

Ratz in the Attic perform throughout Georgia, Tennessee, and North Carolina and have a good mix of Southern Rock, Classic Rock, Country, Blues, and Jazz in their song list. They cover songs from bands like the Beatles, ZZ Top, Bad Company, Dwight Yoakam, Wilson Pickett, and the Commodores plus many more. When they are in the house, you better have your dancin’ shoes on!

Flies and Fly Water

Fly fishingWarmer weather is just around the corner and it’s about time for spring fishing. Smithgall Woods Conservation Park in Helen, GA is having a day of helpful hints, show and tell, learning to cast, tie flies, read streams and more on March 19, 2011 from 9:30 AM to 12 Noon. Wildlife Interpretive Specialist, Sheila Humphrey, will be offering a presentation on stream entomology aka stream critters.

Astronomy Night

GalaxyUnicoi State Park in Helen, Georgia is offering a “sidewalk stargazing” program and lectures will be conducted by an Astronomy Club for those novice stargazers who have an interest in learning about the winter sky. This program will take place on March 26, 2011 from 8 PM to 10 PM, weather and clouds permitting.

Volunteer Day at Unicoi State Park

Help keep our state parks beautiful by volunteering a few hours of your time to help spruce up Unicoi State Park in Helen, Georgia on March 12, 2011 from 9 AM to 1 PM. Unicoi State Park offers many great programs throughout the year and has many scenic mountain trails which are wonderful for those hiking and biking enthusiasts. The park also has many picnic tables available to enjoy an afternoon picnic. Visit the lodge gift shop to see a nice selection of handmade quilts and locally crafted pottery.
